hi shintu, you can use WTP (Web Tools Project) plugin and configure the application server that's run the jsp files (tomcat or not).

First of all, create a new WTP Project, add your source code and jsp files and right-click in the project->Run As->Run on Server. You also add the server in eclipse in Window->Preferences->Server->Installed Runtimes.

Question 05-28-2008, 07:03 AM

Hi All,

I'm a newbie and have a related question ... do one have to install the Apache Tomcat server on the developing machine in order to write dynamic web applications. To be more clear, I have two machines, one on which I'm developing and another one with Apache and Tomcat servers running. I would like to use the existing servers instead of installing the servers on the developing machine, but whenever I have tried to create a new tomcat server in Eclipse it is asking me for the installation path on the local developing machine.
Is this possible

best regards

Hi aradicev,

When I'm developing I prefer to install a tomcat server in my machine to test my applications (it's faster). Later I export de WTP project into War file and publish in other tomcat (for example, in a server).
If you don't want to install two tomcat server, you could try to configure in Window->Preference->Server->Installed Runtime. Do you have a Windows operating system?
Maybe you can do this:
- Add a new tomcat server (f.e. apache tomcat 5.x)
- In tomcat installation directory -> Browse
- Find the tomcat installation directory in "My Networks" (first of all, you must share this directory in other machine).
- Select a JRE machine
- Finish button.
- Run your application.

I've never tried this but it could works.

Hi netverde,

thanks for the quick replay ... the developing machine is a windows box and the server is a linux box.
My first guess was exactly what you're suggesting ... I'll try this and let you know if it works.
