Jboss server hangs in state "starting"

I am running eclipse 3.3.2 with a runtime and server configured with JBoss 4.2.2.

It has been working fine for some time. Now when I start the server, using the JBoss server view, the server actually starts and I can run web applications that are deployed to JBoss but the server status hangs in "starting" state. Becuase of this I can't do other server operations while I am trying to develop and deploy my application.

I deleted and rebuilt the workspace from scratch and it still does it.
