Question Eclipse Plugin For SQL/DB management - 02-15-2008, 06:18 AM

I'm looking for a plugin for Eclipse to replace DBArtisan/SQL Server Managment Studio.

It'd be great to be able to use Eclipse for sql development, esp so I could manage scripts using cvs etc all in the same IDE...

Does anyone have any recommendations?
Does such a plugin exist?

THANKS!

Hi Sarah,
There's a few plugins covering SQL development in Eclipse - mostly tools you need to pay for.

My Eclipse Database Explorer provide a very nice Database Explorer . There's a free trial you can download to see if it matches your requirements.

QuantumDB sounds pretty complete to me.

I'd be interested to see how you get on with the tools, and if it covers all the features that you needed from your previous tools.
Let us know!

James

Hey Sarah!

I was happy to see your post! In fact, we are posting today/tomorrow to our website (Embarcadero Technologies) Beta 1 of our company's SQL development environment for Eclipse. After learning the ins and outs of database management/modeling/development with our main core products (e.g. ER/Studio, DBArtisan/RapidSQL) we have heavily embraced Eclipse as a deployment mechanism for our products and have launched Change Manager and EA/Studio...both Eclipse RCPs. We've also moved quickly to bolster our development staff with Eclipse-heavy engineers...including two luminaries from the Eclipse organization itself to help provide guidance to the products we're launching.

The SQL development product launching into beta today/tomorrow, "PowerSQL", will have various deployment options...e.g. as either a stand alone RCP or indeed a plug-in to bury within your Eclipse IDE installation alongside your other Eclipse bits. It will be extremely cost effective as well to ensure we can meet the budget constraints of small shops...not just 'the Enterprise'. We consider this product not a replacement for our flagship DBArtisan or RapidSQL for that matter, but rather a full on developer-focused SQL IDE with all the features you'd expect in a progressive coding environment...e.g. like you've had within your Java/C++/etc worlds for years.

We're excited about it and we hope you'll join the open beta! Keep pinging our website for the announcement and link over the next 24 hours.

My best,

Greg

Thanks for that Greg,
DBArtisan is a great tool, as a java developer integrating my sql development into Eclipse would be very helpful esp. when I spend most of my time running and writing simple scripts and don't utilize the more complicated functions of a pure DB management tool on a day-to-day basis.

Can I ask if DBArtisan has a method of integrating with versioning software like CVS? Managing a project's scripts in CVS is one of my primary motivations for using a DB plugin in Eclipse. (Basically I'm tired of the db guys sending me their scripts and expecting me to version & comment them just because Eclipse provides a nice interface to CVS )

Sarah!

You nailed it. The raison d'etre behind PowerSQL was that we felt, as a long time provider of database tools, that there was a massive deficit in the market for developers to efficiently work against LOTS of database types (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, MySQL, JDBC sources, etc) in a manner that TRULY matches the sophisticated tooling of Java IDE’s…but 100% demonstrating the depth of expertise required to work against relational databases. In other words: all RDBMSs are not created equal and a simple browser with a generic JDBC connection isn’t going to cut it for the real developer. So, super rich parsing, mad performance, all the bits like debugging etc have got to be intuitive and most importantly ‘instructional’ to the application developer….many of whom are crossing over to spend time deeply on database work these days.

But I digress! You got me rolling!

Back to the DBArtisan question, unfortunately no, Artisan is not SCC compliant like it’s sister tool Rapid SQL is. It is on the road map though…but PowerSQL to the core will allow this in Eclips as you suggest.

Stay tuned!!
Greg

One other thing folks: I normally try to stay agnostic as a vendor and would let the course of 'nature' pave its way to have users find stuff we make, but this thread touched a heart string for sure given all the exciting stuff we've got going on.

Just my post-preface!
