Open source is emerging and slowly taking over the World. I am quite hopeful and sure that Open Source is going to be the biggest thing in the future. Thanks to Richard Stallman, who initiated the Free Software Foundation (FSF) and finally the Open Source Project.

The idea of GNU came into existence while Richard Stallman was still present at MIT. Stallman a system administrator at MIT felt the need of Free software. So, GNU Project was launched in 1983 by Richard Stallman originally to develop a Unix-compatible operating system called GNU, intended to be entirely free software. Many programs and utilities were contributed by developers around the world, and by 1991 most of the components of the system were ready. The kernel of GNU, The Hurd was a problem though. So, The GNU project was ready with a missing a Kernel.
